Renting vs. Buying Construction Equipment: What Makes Sense for Your Project
It's one of the most common questions we get at Prairie Equipment: "Should I rent or buy?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but here's how to think through it based on what we've seen work for hundreds of customers across Western Canada.
When Renting Makes More Sense
Short-term or seasonal projects. If you need a telehandler for a 3-week commercial build or a scissor lift for a one-time installation, renting saves you from owning a depreciating asset that sits idle 90% of the year.
Testing before committing. Not sure if a wheel loader is the right size for your operation? Rent one for a month. You'll know within a week whether it's the right fit — without spending $40,000+ to find out.
Cash flow management. Rentals are an operating expense, not a capital expenditure. That matters when you're bidding jobs and managing seasonal income.
Our rental rates start at $200–$250/day, with weekly and monthly rates that get significantly better the longer you rent. A telehandler that costs $250/day drops to roughly $130/day on a monthly rate.
When Buying Makes More Sense
Daily or weekly use year-round. If you're running a loader 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year, the math shifts hard toward ownership. A few months of rent payments could equal a down payment.
Core business equipment. The machine that defines your operation — the loader on your farm, the excavator for your contracting company — should usually be owned. You need it reliable and available every single day.
Building equity. Equipment holds value. A well-maintained FOX wheel loader or JCB telehandler can be resold or traded in when you're ready to upgrade.
The Hybrid Approach
Many of our customers do both: they own their core machines and rent specialty equipment or extra capacity for peak seasons. A contractor might own a wheel loader but rent a scissor lift for a specific phase of a build. A farmer might own a compact loader but rent a telehandler for a week during harvest.
